parenting tip: talk to your kids about mental illness. tell them they might have a hard time. tell them they can ask for therapy and medication. tell them they aren’t alone. tell them if your family has a history of mental illnesses and which ones. just fucking talk to your kids and be there for them.

Woman live tweets IBM execs discussing why they don’t hire women, tries not to throw up

Toronto-based editor Lyndsay Kirkham has started a firestorm this week after overhearing what was apparently an incredibly sexist conversation between IBM executives at lunch — and live-tweeting it.

Unaware that they were transmitting sexist nonsense to cyberspace, the IBM executives openly discussed “why they don’t hire women.” If you take Kirkham’s account at its word, it actually gets way worse.

But wait, there’s more Follow micdotcom

Obama just took a major stand against a shady corporate practice

It looks like Obama’s next hot button issue is at the other end of the wage spectrum: putting corporate fat cats in their place.

  • The US Government: We're not going to make it federally mandatory for people to get paid a wage they can actually live off of
  • The US Government: If people want to make a living, they'll just have to work 16+ hours a day
  • The US Government: And if their kids end up disenfranchised because of a lack of parental involvement, well that's not our problem
  • The US Government: In fact, what is our problem is creating a system that will funnel these disenfranchised youth into our prison system so they can work for corporations (that promise us money) for damn near free
  • The US Government: If they don't want to fall victim to this system, then they can seek higher education
  • The US Government: Except such an education will be inaccessible to most disenfranchised people and skewed in favor of the financially stable
  • The US Government: And we're not going to make intervention programs like sex education and conflict resolution federally mandatory, because that's the parent's job
  • The US Government: The parent who is working 16 hours a day

Couple trolls anti-abortion protestors in the best way possible

Frustrated and bemused by the pro-life protesters at the local clinic in Cary, N.C., Tina Haver Currin and her husband Grayson Haver Currin decided to exemplify “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”

So they joined them, and have joined the protesters every Saturday, but in their own way and with their own sense of humor. The resulting project has now being documented in our favorite new Tumblr, Saturday Chores.

America, we know you hate Congress, but this makes no sense

Americans don’t show their political anger through passion. They show it through apathy.

Only 7% of Americans have “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in Congress according to a Gallup poll released last month. That’s the lowest it’s been since Gallup started asking in 1973 — meaning it might be the lowest it’s ever been.
